TULSA, Okla. — Home improvement projects can sometimes hit a snag, and you may need to call in a plumber for help. But what does the Better Business Bureau (BBB) say about choosing plumbers?
The BBB said there are three things you should do when choosing a plumber for the project.
“Start by getting three different estimates, check out your companies before you even have anybody step foot on your property. So check with the Better Business Bureau, check their reviews online,” said Amie Mitchell with the BBB.
Mitchell said to read those three estimates carefully. Check and see if there is a flat rate including materials, or if the plumber will charge you for supplies separately.
Ask if there are any extra costs for equipment and ask if the plumber will use drop sheets or mats to protect your home. Ask if the cost of cleanup is included in that estimate.
If you want certain fixtures, you’ll need to check with the plumber before you buy the faucet you want them to install.
Get the estimates, figure out what it is they’re needing, as far as supplies, can you purchase those supplies ahead of time or is it contractually an agreement that they purchase the supplies? You want to make sure everything is in line with the contractor you hire before you purchase any products,” said Mitchell.
Whatever happens, don’t hurry. Take the time to do your homework. “I think the things people get stuck in, in the worst situations, is they get panicked. I want my house to be back to normal, everyone wants that in a disaster or anything wrong with their home, you want your toilet or your water to work right,” Mitchell said. “Anytime that situation happens you get the risk of making a rash decision, and that’s the last thing you want to do because what’s going to happen is you may end up in a worse situation than you even started with and that’s really unfortunate,” she continued.
The Better Business Bureau also recommends you check the warranties for both the products and your plumber’s labor. Look for plumbers who are members of professional organizations like the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, or the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association.
