Cherokee Nation says it is not “building a jail” in north Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. — Cherokee Nation Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. says Cherokee Nation is looking to potential purchase a facility in north Tulsa, but contrary to rumors on social media they are absolutely not “building a jail.”

Chief Hoskin tweeted out a statement saying the Nation is considering purchasing and investing $3 million in the North Pointe property in north Tulsa. They are looking to house prosecutors, court staff, law enforcement, office space and community space in an effort to help them meet their obligations under McGirt.

“Although we feel improving access to our courts and others services, as well as rehabilitating that facility for community use, is a positive for Cherokee Nation and the community, our initial feeling about the project is only part of the consideration” Hoskin wrote in a statement.

Cherokee Nation will meet with the Tulsa City Board of Adjustment June 28.

Hoskin says that hearing “was, and remains, simply one part of the process as we consider the investment. We will continue to listen to community stakeholders as we work to grow with the north Tulsa community as good neighbors.”
