CATOOSA, Okla. — Catoosa's Blue Whale is getting a bath!
OK Chive is holding a gathering on Sunday, October 28 to begin cleanup at the Blue Whale site along Route 66. The group is encouraging anyone who wants to help to show up at 1:30 p.m.
They plan on clearing out brush, cleaning the Blue Whale, adding park benches, and replacing part of the deck.
Zoologist Hugh Davis finished building the whale by hand in 1972 as an anniversary gift for his wife, Zelta. The idea began as a fish intended only for the family but it grew into a whale open to the public.
The Blue Whale is still owned and operated by the Davis family.
Locals and Route 66 travelers stopped to fish and swim for many years, but swimming is no longer available. The whale was closed in 1988 but later refurbished by the Catoosa Chamber of Commerce in 1997.
OK Chive is hoping to clean it up and to help the Blue Whale achieve official historical status.
The area is now open for families to have picnics and fish.
