Artist paints mural in downtown Tulsa, hopes to raise awareness about gun violence

TULSA, Okla. — An international artist just painted a new mural in Tulsa’s Blue Dome District to raise awareness for stopping gun violence.

Kyle Holbrook painted the mural in the parking lot across from Andolini’s and Yokozuna this past weekend.

The mural here in Green Country is one of more than 40 across the country making up Holbrook’s ‘Stop Gun Violence Mural Tour’. The artist told FOX23 he’s lost loved ones to gun violence, which has caused him a lot of pain and sparked the idea for this tour.

The main focus of all the murals is a large hand. Holbrook designed them this way because he said, “I don’t think we should take guns away from people, that’s an American right, so, it’s anti-gun violence and so that’s why we put the hand, so that people focus on the humans.”

The mural sites are chosen based on cities with a prominent art scene and that have been affected by gun violence.

So far this year, Tulsa Police data shows 39 people have been shot and killed, including the four victims of the mass shooting at St. Francis in June.

Holbrook hopes individuals stop and take a selfie with the mural to share its message and larger groups take action. There are still a few more murals to go including in states like Alaska and Hawaii.
