Magic City Books has a book club for every Tulsan this New Year

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa bookstore, Magic City Books, is starting the new year off one page at a time.

Magic City Books Buyer and Author Program Coordinator Pat Cawiezell said many people look at the New Year as a chance to start fresh or plan resolutions to make themselves a little bit better in the upcoming year.

“For some folks that might be starting a new workout routine, that might be changing their diet or eating in a healthier way and for other folks, that means giving themselves more time to read,” Cawiezell said.

Cawiezell said a great way for people to take some accountability when wanting to return to reading, pursuing that New Year’s resolution, is joining a book club.

According to Cawiezell, Magic City will be continuing some of their existing book clubs and adding new clubs to the roster.

“Book clubs are important because it gives you the opportunity to read something you might not have otherwise,” he said. “Maybe you read a lot of fiction and this gives you the opportunity to read more non-fiction, and vice versa. Or maybe you read a lot of books written by women and you don’t read many books written by men and this gives you the opportunity to do so, and vice versa.”

A book club is not only for reading, but for meeting new people and spending time engaging with others, Cawiezell said.

“Actually attending that meeting and discussing that book is something we do not have enough of in our current life,” he said. “You might meet new people through a book club, or it might be a group of people that you spend a lot of time with already. But you’re discussing this piece of art that you’ve all kind of experienced on your own and you’re coming together.”

Cawiezzel said Magic City has more than 60 readers already registered for the January book clubs.
