Man who killed 911 dispatcher in hit and run sentenced to 10 years in prison

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa County judge decided the man who killed a 911 dispatcher in a hit and run crash last fall will spend 10 years in prison.

FOX23 covered the case extensively when it happened.

Last October long time Tulsa 911 dispatcher Mary Byers life was cut short on her way to work.

Tulsa police said “It’s completed responding to one of your own, it’s a nightmare…”

Cody Carrell initially ran from the scene of the crash in early October.

When he turned himself in hours later, he was asked if he had anything to say.

“Sorry to the victim’s family..”

That same day FOX23 spoke with Byers’ fellow dispatchers, who were distraught.

“She’s just going to be truly missed…that’s all I got…it’s just a really hard day…”

This week Carrell pleaded guilty to first degree manslaughter and other charges in the case.

The judge sentenced him to 10 years in prison.

Judging from the local response, many people don’t think it was enough.

Byers served our community for 26 years.
