Racers run through downtown and midtown for Tulsa Run

TULSA, Okla. — Hundreds of racers took over downtown and midtown Tulsa today for the 45th Annual Tulsa Run.

More than 5,000 athletes hit the streets of Tulsa for three distances: 2k, 5k, and 15k.

The 5k and 15k included athletes both on foot and in wheelchairs.

Race Director Matt Stockman said the event also donates money to charities that sign up to run.

“We have over 15 groups that we’re giving money back to this year,” he said.

FOX23 spoke with a first-time runner about the race.

“I was like a racecar going really fast,” said 5-year-old Declan Lloyd.

Declan had just finished his very first 5k run. His dad, Buddy Lloyd, said the Tulsa Run has become a family tradition.

“It’s a community event, so it’s fun to run with your family. This is something our family has been doing for probably about 10 years. I have four kids and we’ve all run it at various ages,” said Buddy.

Buddy said his favorite part was crossing the finish line with his son.

“My favorite part was actually holding his hand and crossing the finish line together. He was really proud of himself,” he said.

“I tried to beat him,” Declan said.

FOX23 asked who won between them, and both father and son confirmed that Declan won.

Austin Givens has run in the event for the past 12 years. He said he loves the scenery.

“I love running around downtown Tulsa, and the scenery and the houses and riverside.”

With it being so close to Halloween, a few runners and spectators dressed up in their Halloween costumes.
