Travel agents, AAA anticipate busiest travel day in decades

TULSA, Okla. — Inside Journey Travels small office in Tulsa are some busy travel agents.

Agents say anyone booking a flight for Wednesday or Thursday can probably expect the worst when it comes to price and comfort.

“Travel is at an all-time high,” said travel agent Diane Henderson. “I am expecting crowds galore.”

Travelers will be paying quite a bit more when it comes to airfare.

“Ten to fifteen percent higher but there are still those deals to be had out there,” she said.

Henderson is a third-generation travel agent. She says planning a trip for thanksgiving now would be tough, but overall people are paying even when planning.

“People have money to travel, and they have sat at home for a couple of years with Covid and they have savings stocked up and are ready to go places,” Henderson said.

Last year was one the slowest years for journey travels but now the traffic in the sky is sky high.

“This is supposed to be our slow time but the two of us and our agents in Oklahoma City have been nonstop and this has been the busiest year they ever had,” she said.

A snapshot for last minute deals just to some popular domestic places like Orlando show costs to be just over $500 for a round trip.

“The fares are at all time high, although I see there looks like fare war going on right now,” she explained.

If a last minute trip is something you can’t afford right now, you still have time to plan for Christmas and make the most of the holidays.

AAA expects pre pandemic level travel numbers and expect that the most popular form of travel will be driving.

The national average is around 3.66 per gallon but many gas stations around Tulsa are dropping below three dollars per gallon.
