The woman, from Rocklin, discovered the feline was not a cat, but a young fox, KOVR-TV reported.

“A concerned family member called us after seeing the scared little guy and Animal Control responded to transport the critter to Gold Country Wildlife Rescue,” the Rocklin Police Department said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Police also gave advice about what to do if a person encounters an injured or abandoned wild animal, People reported.

According to the Facebook post, police recommend that citizens contact a local wildlife rehabilitation center. The department listed the Humane Society of the United States and AnimalHelpNow as resources.

Rocklin police also suggested that until wildlife officials arrive, the animal should be kept in a “dark, quiet, mildly warm” place away from children and other animals.
