Trial of Uber driver accused of hitting, killing passenger in Tulsa begins with bodycam footage

TULSA, Okla. — UPDATE (11/28/22) — Omar Baabbad has been found guilty of manslaughter in the first degree. His sentencing will be held on Nov. 28 at 9:30 a.m.

Omar Baabbad was charged with murder in the first degree of his passenger Jeremy Shadrick of Tulsa.

On Wednesday, the jury heard testimony establishing the scene of the incident. One witness gave emotional testimony about watching Shadrick’s body “go up into the air,” after he was hit by the car.

Another witness testified to how he rendered first aid to Shadrick the night of the incident after identifying Baabbad in the courtroom.

The most disturbing evidence was the body camera video of the responding Tulsa Police officer, which showed Shadrick bleeding and having difficulty breathing.

That video also recorded Baabbad answering officers’ questions. Baabbad asked the officers if Shadrick “was okay,” one time, but not before asking for the whereabouts of his cell phone – for which Baabbad said he chased Shadrick.

Baabbad insisted Shadrick threatened him with a gun, but officers testified no weapon was found at the scene.

Shadrick’s family filled half of the courtroom, but several members left while the 14-minute body camera video was played, after the Court warned them of the graphic nature of that video.
