OU student-athletes suspended, could be in connection with incident involving police

The University of Oklahoma says it has suspended student-athletes. That announcement could be in connection to an incident being investigated by the Norman Police Department that happened Thursday night at an apartment complex.

No names have been released by the police or the university, but SI Sooners is reporting the student-athletes are football players.

Norman Police Department Captain Brent Barbour told FOX23 Friday night that, in the original 911 call, a victim reported a robbery and said there was a gun involved. Captain Barbour said there were two victims and three potential suspects. According to the incident report, one of the victims said he was bleeding because he was hit with a gun. He didn’t go to the hospital though.

Captain Barbour said the police knows the names of the people involved and believe they all know each other. Police detained, interviewed, then released one of the suspects Thursday night, but no one has been arrested.

The OU athletic department sent FOX23 a statement that reads:

“We are aware of a matter that may involve OU student-athletes and are monitoring the situation closely. The student-athletes in question have been suspended pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. We have no other information to share at this time.”

Captain Barbour told FOX23 he does not anticipate any updates to the investigation until next week.
