Fundraiser held for teenager with Down Syndrome and cancer

CATOOSA, Okla. — Drivers laid down rubber for a good cause at Kwik Lube on Route 66 in Catoosa.

“Burnout On 66″ raises money for kids diagnosed with cancer, and each year they pick a new recipient.

This year they’re helping out 16-year-old Cherish and her family.

FOX23 spoke with the girl and her mother about how the money will help them.

Christi Reed, Cherish’s mom, said the event was a huge blessing.

“It’s a huge blessing. She’s had a rough go. Her body rebelled a little bit at the beginning of our chemo, so she was on dialysis and a ventilator,” she said.

In addition to fighting Leukemia, Cherish also struggles with Down Syndrome.

“Being Down Syndrome, it’s taken her a little longer to get on her feet again than others. But she’s getting stronger. We’re walking more. She’s doing great in physical therapy,” said Christi.

Jake Powell started “Burnout on 66″ four years ago when a friend’s son was diagnosed with cancer.

Powell said last year, they raised more than $11,000 for a child. This year’s goal is to raise $15,000 for Cherish.

“There are a ton of people that help out in both time and money. We get local businesses to give us sponsorship,” said Powell.

The show featured both classic and modern cars. Cherish got to pick best overall.

Powell said they money raised will go to Cherish and her family to spend on whatever they need.

Christi said they plan on getting a minivan to better accommodate Cherish’s mobility needs.
