Locals flock to Sapulpa restaurant to enjoy last meal before its closure

SAPULPA, Okla. — Freddie’s Bar-B-Que and Steak House has closed its doors for good in Sapulpa, but during their last few days, people lined up all the way around the front of the building to get in and enjoy their favorite restaurant one last time.

The iconic restaurant has been serving up steaks and BBQ in Sapulpa for 60 years.

Barbara McGee has been coming here for more than 30 years and loves their Lebanese specialties, like hummus, tabbouleh, and cabbage rolls.

“We always ordered the mini cabbage rolls to-go, and then give them to friends and family, because that’s our New Year’s tradition. And, my friend and I come and get the Freddie’s special steak with the blackened sauce,” said McGee.

The restaurant announced their plans to close their doors in an October 30th Facebook post, after the restaurant’s owner, Edmond “Tex” Slyman died due to health issues back in July.

Slyman moved the restaurant to Sapulpa after the original Drumright location was destroyed by a fire in 1978. The business actually dates back to 1962.

The Lebanese dishes are a nod to the founder’s heritage, and McGee isn’t sure where she’ll find the cabbage rolls that she knows and loves.

“I’ve already checked, I don’t think there’s any place I going to be able to get the same cabbage rolls. They are similar, but not the same,” said McGee.

She’s just one of many customers who say they’re going to miss Freddie’s Bar-B-Que and Steak House.

There’s no word on what’s next for the building or the property, but the restaurant’s owners say they’re grateful for years of serving customers.
