Muskogee woman waits for justice after husband was shot to death in front of their children in 2021

A Muskogee woman said she is still waiting on justice for her husband who she said was shot in front of her children.

FOX23 initially reported back in December when Trent Scoggins was killed and the arrest of Robert Rainford who was charged with murder in Indian country.

Ever since that day Trent’s wife Rhonda said she has been waiting for him to face a judge.

“We are struggling in so many ways,” said Scoggins. “We are trying to put our lives back together and I can do it.

Rhonda remembers her husband, Trent. She misses him. She looks at pictures of him often and the bass guitar that he loved playing sitting in her living room.

She said her three kids, especially Jonah remembers the night he was shot. Jonah is just 11 years old.

“When he was getting shot, I was just like getting my mind was set to get mama, and so the cops can come here,” Jonah said.

Jonah said he took Oliver to the bathroom to make sure he was safe and wanted to check on his mom too.

It’s a hard memory to deal with.

“I just think he’s gone, and I think about it, and this is what I do,” Jonah said. “But then again it is kind of awkward because I am a kid.”

Jacob is the oldest and said he struggles some days too.

“Sometimes I just wake up on the wrong side of the bed,” he said.

Rhonda wants to see justice for her husband and for all three of them.

“How can I look at my kids and tell them the justice system is going to take care of them?” she said.

According to court documents the man arrested and charged for murder, Robert Rainford, is pleading insanity as of August 26th. He has had several trial dates set but each were continued.

As of Sept. 27, he is ordered to undergo evaluation to determine if he was in fact insane at the time of the shooting.

“We watched it happen. There is no question in our minds. We are not getting anywhere. It is just a standstill,” she said.

A standstill for them but a family that can’t sit still and enjoys being around each other and thinking about Trent.

Trent was a well-known musician who had a studio in his garage. The family said they are reopening it and working on getting it set back up. They hope to have it finished by October of 2023.
