TFD celebrates fire station’s 115th anniversary

TULSA, Okla. — Tulsa Firefighters are celebrating Fire Station 2′s 115 years of protecting Tulsans.

Tulsa Fire Chief Michael Baker said Station 2 is the oldest continuously operated fire stations in Tulsa.

“It’s got a long history of being a staple in downtown Tulsa,” he said.

The Tulsa Fire Department (TFD) opened Fire Station 2 on Feb. 5, 1908, just a few months after Oklahoma became a state.

The station has changed locations several times over the years, until 1981, when TFD moved Station 2 to it’s current location on W. Edison St.

“They find themselves a lot at the Day Center, and the Salvation Army, and the Iron Gate Facility, and the jail. So, to work here you have to have a heart for the citizens of Tulsa,” Chief Baker said.

Captain Wes Lightle has been at Station 2 for more than a year and said they run around 15 calls a day.

“We’re the fourth busiest engine in the city last year, and combined between our engine and our ladder, we run about 4,500 calls per year,” he said.

Captain Lightle said they have a diverse response area that keeps changing and growing as downtown develops.

“We never know who we’re going to run on, but when we do make those calls, we treat every single person the exact same,” he said.

TFD said they look forward to many more years of serving the community from Station 2.
