‘The Nutty Professor’ star Stella Stevens dies at 84

LOS ANGELES — Actress Stella Stevens, known for her role in “The Nutty Professor,” has died at the age of 84.

Stevens’ estate said that she died on Friday in Los Angeles following a long illness, according to The Associated Press.

Stevens was born Estelle Caro Eggleston in Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 1938, according to the AP. She got married at the age of 16 and divorced a couple of years later. She had a child named Andrew Stevens in 1955 when she was just 17.

Variety reported that Andrew Stevens said that his mother was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Stevens began acting while she attended Memphis State University and she had a minor role in Bing Crosby’s musical, “Say One for Me,” in 1959, according to the AP.

Stevens won a Golden Globe for her role in “Say One for Me” as Most Promising Newcomer, according to Deadline.

Stevens starred with Elvis Presley in “Girls! Girls! Girls!” and Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor,” according to Variety.

Stevens was also in “The Poseidon Adventure” which was one of the biggest hits in 1972, according to Deadline.

She also appeared in other hit shows “Bonanza,” “Ben Casey,” “Wonder Woman,” “The Love Boat,” “Police Story,” “Magnum P.I.,” “Silk Stalkings,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and many more, according to Deadline.

Stevens is survived by her son and three grandchildren, according to Deadline.
