Vinita restaurant breaks world record for most amount of stickers on car

VINITA, Okla. — A restaurant in Vinita now officially holds a world record.

The community came out to help the Hi-Way Cafe break the record for the most amount of stickers on a car.

They clinched the title Saturday, beating the last record, which was set in Kuwait in 2020, by more than 18,000 stickers.

Beth Hilburn is the owner of the Hi-Way Cafe, which is located on route 66 in Vinita. She said she was super excited.

“Super excited, a little bit emotional because there’s been a lot of blood sweat and tears,” she said.

Hilburn was behind the record attempt and now, a 1963 Rambler is officially the car with the most stickers on it in the world.

In honor of Route 66, the car has 60,066 stickers on it.

Hilburn said breaking a world record is amazing.

“Super exciting, as a kid you always wanted to do that, that’s something that everybody dreams about doing...This was something that I knew the community could come and help with,” she said.

And the community really did help. Around 100 people, young and old, worked around the clock to place each half-inch square.

Samantha and Heath Hughes together stuck around 4,000 in total.

“I just said ‘Hey let’s just go out a few stickers on,’” said Samantha.

“A lot of stickers, blown away, it turned out way better than I expected it to… I thought it was going to be a difficult job to get done and and the team pulled it together and got it done,” said Heath.

Misti Gleason travelled from Texas to place stickers on the car.

“It was awesome, it’s not what I thought, I thought I was going to peel off a like a giant sticker, and then I got here then I found out they are tiny little bitty individual stickers, so it was worth the trip,” she said.

The attempt was part of Mobil1′s “Keep Route 66 Kickin” campaign. The goal is to support small businesses along Route 66.

Rhys Martin is the president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association. He said Route 66 is vital for the small towns along it.

“It’s attractions like this car, or the Blue Whale of Catoosa, or the Coleman Theatre in Miami, that attract people and say ‘we need to stop and spend some time in these towns, spend a little money, grab a bite to eat,’ and that’s so important to keep these towns going,” Martin said.

Mike Marcotte is an adjudicator for Guinness World Records. He said the record took a lot of time.

“They had over 100 people putting on at least one sticker and we had some people that put in 24 plus, maybe 30, hours putting stickers on over the course of the last week, 66,000 stickers, that takes a lot of time to put into this car,” he said.

“This car is going to be a permanent home here in Vinita which is just really exciting, I know they have talked about heat wrapping to the car so that these stickers aren’t going to come off,” he also said.

The car will be displayed at the café and Hilburn said she hopes it will drive success for years to come.

“It’s really important to try to preserve what we have with Route 66 and to help keep it going for future generations,” she said.
